The America’s Cup started off with a bang Saturday afternoon in San Francisco Bay. The weather could not have been better for this prestigious event. Blue skies, light winds, comfortable temperatures – perfect!
June and I were here with our son Kelly, and his girlfriend, Jessica.
I rode down with Kelly from Seattle as he was relocating his truck to his new home here in Berkeley where Jes has begun her PHD program. June joined us after a quick flight Friday evening. We picked her up at Oakland airport just as she stepped from the curb. Great timing!
Anyway, it is now Monday morning. The Emirates, team New Zeeland challengers made short work of USA’s Team Oracle on Saturday. It looked like the best of 17 challenge would be over before it even began, what with 39 second lead in the first heat, and a 52 second lead in the second but, Oracle came back on Sunday. Team Oracle lost the first heat of the day by only a short margin, but took the second in a spectacular finish. In this shot, you can see Oracle flying towards the finish line with Emirates in hot pursuit.
We had a great location to view the westward mark and the finish line, on the pier at America’s Cup Park. I certainly hope Oracle can continue with their new found momentum as it would be a pity to have this series end short. The venue is spectacular, and there is hardly a bad seat on the bay!
