Like a large aircraft rising from the runway, this Great Blue Heron was lifting out of the creek bed I found it in. Powerful and streamlined, it beat skyward until it reached altitude then swiftly flew away.
Around Clear Creek, at the head of Dyes Inlet in Silverdale Washington, these Herons gather to fish as the tide falls. On the other side of Kitsap Peninsula, on Hood Canal, they compete with the Bald Eagles. Makes for a wonderful way to spend a leisurely lunch hour.
